The “Geist Area” of Marion County is the area surrounding Geist Reservoir. It is not an incorporated area such as Lawrence or Oaklandon. It is a shorthand way of speaking of the hundreds of housing developments on and around the Reservoir.
The Reservoir itself was developed in the late 1940’s by the Indianapolis Water Company to serve as a water supply for the city of Indianapolis. It continues to serve as such today. The difference, however, is the incredible number of homes that now line the waterfront. The value of these homes range from $1-5+ million.
The Reservoir is fed by Fall Creek on the north. The dam is located on the south end of the Reservoir and overflows into Fall Creek again. Most of the Reservoir is very shallow (10- ft.).
The Geist Area was developed initially by Shorewood Developers in the early 1980’s. Since then literally thousands of homes have been built around the area, including the Fishers area of Hamilton County, making this one of the fastest growing ares in the nation.
